Opened in the summer of 1966 as an offshoot of the Indica gallery at 6 Mason’s Yard, it was owned by John Dunbar, Peter Asher and Barry Miles, who had been manager at better Books.

While living at the Asher house, Paul McCartney became one of the first customers before the shop had even opened, browsing the books in Asher’s basement. The wood for the shelves and shop counter was picked up from the lumber yard by Dunbar and Miles in McCartney’s Aston Martin car, according to Miles.
